Switched on and fully equipped for STEAM learning
Tamariki from across Christchurch experience a range of interactive learning experiences at Imagination Station.
Our Impact
We funded a full class set of iPads and accessories for Imagination Station, so thousands of Christchurch children can explore new possibilities in STEAM learning.
The Story
Tucked inside Tūranga, Christchurch's central library, Imagination Station is a place where children discover science, technology, engineering, art and maths through play. Every week, families, school groups and after-school programmes pass through its doors. For many, it's their first real encounter with STEAM learning.
The challenge for a charity committed to keeping its programmes free or low-cost is a familiar one: great ideas need great tools, and tools cost money.
In 2025, the Tait Foundation provided Imagination Station with a grant of $25,000, which included $10,000 to purchase a class set of iPads along with the protective covers, screen protectors, transport cases and charging infrastructure needed to put them to proper use. Traci Stanbury, Managing Director of Imagination Station, says it was a level of support that made all the difference.
“By covering the full cost of the iPads, the Tait Foundation enabled us to think beyond partial solutions. It’s this kind of comprehensive support that really maximises our impact. Technology alone is not enough without the infrastructure to sustain it.”
The numbers speak for themselves. In the past financial year alone, Imagination Station facilitated more than 53,000 LEGO STEAM interactions and welcomed over 42,000 visitors through its free play area, alongside hundreds of school, after-school and community classes. The iPads have become a core part of that experience, enabling innovative and engaging learning for every group that walks in.
What made this grant particularly impactful was the attention to the whole picture. By funding the accessories as well as the devices themselves, the technology is more usable – and longer lasting – in a busy, hands-on environment.
“The additional accessories extend the lifespan of the devices, improve safety and portability, and keep them charged and ready for action. They make the technology easier for our staff to manage and ultimately enable better learning outcomes for the children. The funding has made a huge difference for us – we really do rely on partners like the Tait Foundation to provide resources we simply cannot fund ourselves.”
The Tait Foundation is proud to support Imagination Station in making high-quality STEAM learning accessible to every child in Ōtautahi.
